Platform comparisons obsess over themes, apps, and pricing tiers. Fair enough — but those are the parts you can change later. The security model is what you marry. Ask these questions before committing.
1. Who applies security patches — you or them?
Hosted platforms patch the core for everyone automatically. Self-hosted platforms leave it to you — which is fine if you'll actually do it weekly, forever. Be honest about which owner you are; the graveyard of hacked stores is full of optimists.
2. How does it handle card data?
The best answer is 'we never let card numbers touch your site' — payment fields hosted by the processor, keeping you in the lightest PCI category. If the platform routes card data through code you control, your compliance burden is dramatically heavier.
3. What's the extension ecosystem's track record?
Most platform breaches arrive through third-party plugins, not the core. Does the marketplace review extensions? Are abandoned ones flagged or delisted? A wild-west ecosystem transfers risk to you.
4. What do backups look like — and who owns them?
Automatic daily backups with one-click restore should be table stakes. Ask the awkward follow-up: can you export a full copy of your data whenever you want? A backup you can't take with you is also a lock-in mechanism.
5. Does it support proper staff access controls?
Separate accounts per employee, role-based permissions, two-factor authentication, and an audit log of who changed what. If everyone shares one admin login, your first staff departure becomes a security event.
6. What happens when things go wrong?
Is there real security support, or forums? Published incident history? A platform that has handled incidents transparently beats one that claims to have never had any.
7. Can outside tools verify it?
Whatever the platform promises, you want independent eyes: external vulnerability scanning, uptime monitoring, certificate checks. A platform that resists outside verification is asking for unearned trust.
That last layer is where Trust Guard fits regardless of the platform you pick — independent daily scanning and a customer-facing seal that shows shoppers your store checks out. Platform-agnostic, five-minute setup.
